Meet the Board of Trustees for the Stone County Health Department

A five-member Board of Trustees governs the Stone County Health Department.  Each board member serves an alternating 4-year term and is elected by the public.  The board meets monthly on the second Monday of the month.  The board is responsible to make and adopt policies, ordinances, and regulations that will assure the improvement of health of all inhabitants of the county.

The five board members are:
Phyllis Knapp, Chair, Phyllis has lived in the Galena area for the past 32-years operating a Child Care business for the past 30-years.  She has served on the board for 25-years.  She states, “One reason I have served on the health department board for so long is my commitment to the services provided.  I support all programs but believe the W.I.C. program is very important.  I utilized the W.I.C. program and health department services when my children were young, now my grandchildren are benefiting from the same services”.

Julie Green Beckel, Vice-Chair, Julie has served 16-years on the board and has lived in the Galena area for the last 20-years.  Julie is a registered nurse and has retired from the MO Veteran’s Home in Mt. Vernon.  Julie states that, “Serving on the Health Department board has been a very exciting and rewarding time as the Health Department has grown and is serving many more residents of Stone County, along with having a definite positive effect on the environment through our Environmental Services Section”.

Tony DeLong has been a board member for the past three years.  Tony is a lifelong resident living in the Crane area; he served as a County Commissioner from 1993 to 2002.  Tony is employed with the University of Missouri Extension as a County Council Coordinator.  Tony states, “I continue to serve Stone County in an area of growth and concern.  Serving on the County Health Board allows me to support the service that ensures quality of life for all who live and work in Stone County.  Protecting the citizen’s health allows all a greater peace of mind by knowing the water is cleaner, food is safer, and that there is someone watching and taking action daily in keeping us safer.”

Dorothy Erickson has served on the board since April of 2007.  Dorothy has been a resident in the Blue Eye area for 12-years.  Dorothy has a BA in Education and a Masters in counseling from UMKC, she retired as a counselor from the Center School District in Kansas City, MO.  Since retirement Dorothy describes herself as becoming a “professional” volunteer, she says, “Thanks, Stone County voters for electing me to the Stone County Health Department Board. I am learning as I serve, how very important our Stone County Health Department is to each and every one of us, protecting and improving our quality of life”.

Doris Herington moved to Lampe in November, 1998 after living in CA's Bay Area for 38 years. She retired from 23 years of teaching elementary and junior high students in Iowa, Florida, and California where she helped establish the King's Academy Christian School in Sunnyvale, CA. As a member of the First Baptist Church of Kimberling City Doris enjoys participating in the Samaritan's Purse and the Prayer Quilt ministries, as well as serving in the library. She states, "I look forward to serving on the board for the Stone County Health Department as a way to help protect and improve life here in Southwest Missouri".

The Board of Trustees meets the 3rd Monday of each month at 8:30 a.m. at the Galena Office. The public is welcome to attend. If you wish to participate please contact our Administrator Ms. Angela Ford to add your name to the agenda.
